Orientability and energy minimization in liquid crystal models

چکیده
Uniaxial nematic liquid crystals are modelled in the Oseen-Frank theory through a unit vector field n. This theory has the apparent drawback that it does not respect the head-to-tail symmetry in which n should be equivalent to -n. This symmetry is preserved in the constrained Landau de Gennes theory that works with the tensor Q = s ( n⊗ n− 1 3 Id ) . We study the differences and the overlaps between the two theories. These depend on the regularity class used as well as on the topology of the underlying domain. We show that for simply-connected domains and in the natural energy class W 1,2 the two theories coincide, but otherwise there can be differences between the two theories, which we identify. In the case of planar domains we completely characterise the instances in which the predictions of the constrained Landau de Gennes theory differ from those of the Oseen-Frank theory.

Finite Element Analysis of the Landau-de Gennes Minimization Problem for Liquid Crystals∗
This paper describes the Landau-de Gennes free-energy minimization problem for computing equilibrium configurations of the tensor order parameter field that characterizes the molecular orientational properties of liquid crystal materials. Analytical and numerical issues are addressed. Conditions guaranteeing well posedness (existence, regularity) of the problem are given, as is a nonlinear fini...
متن کاملEnergy Minimization for Liquid Crystal Equilibrium with Electric and Flexoelectric Effects
This paper outlines an energy-minimization finite-element approach to the modeling of equilibrium configurations for nematic liquid crystals in the presence of internal and external electric fields. The method targets minimization of free energy based on the electrically and flexoelectrically augmented Frank–Oseen free energy models. The Hessian, resulting from the linearization of the first-or...
متن کاملGeneration of Multiple Circular Walls on a Thin Film of Nematic Liquid Crystal by Laser Scanning
We found that multiple circular walls (MCW) can be generated on a thin film of a nematic liquid crystal through a spiral scanning of a focused IR laser. The ratios between radii of adjacent rings of MCW were almost constant. These constant ratios can be explained theoretically by minimization of the Frank elastic free energy of nematic medium. The director field on a MCW exhibits chiral symmetr...
متن کاملRemoval of crystal violet from aquatic environment by surfactant-modified dolomite
This paper presents the adsorption of crystal violet (CV+) from aqueous solution on surfactant-modified dolomite. Liquid phase batch operations were carried out to observe the effect of various experimental parameters such as initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and NaCl concentration. The optimum conditions for these parameters were calculated by Taguchi method. Equilibrium isotherm...
متن کاملTemperature Tunability of Dielectric/ Liquid Crystal / Dielectric Photonic Crystal Structures
Recently, photonic crystals doped with liquid crystal (LC) material havegained much research interest. In this article new ternary one-dimensional photoniccrystal introduced and studied. The liquid crystal layer of 5CB and 5PCH is sandwichedby two dielectric layers. For the first time, we use four structures SiO2/UCF35/CaF2,SiO2/5CB/CaF2, NFK51/UCF35/NPSK53 and NFK51/5CB/NPSK53. The effect ofte...
